The Rhino Prime codex entry, as best I can tell, describes the initial discovery of the ability of Tenno to control Warframes via transference. In one of the warframe wikis, I think the Zariman Ten-Zero wiki or Warframe wiki, it says that during the old war, the Orokin were holding a reward ceremony for the Tenno, when the Warframes supp п»їosedly acted on their own acco п»їrd, and slaughtered the Orokin civilization themselves. In the Second Dream quest, your warframe acts of it's own volition. Rhino's description paints him as a frame who has lost the transference link to his operator, and goes on a rampage, literally eating people. Regular Warframes are also sentient beings, just not fully. (I'm sticking with the former, since Margulis supposedly loved the tenno like her own children)

Umbra was a Dax soldier infected with a strain of the Infestation, which later morphed him into the Warframe.ДЄll warframes are of infested flesh to some degree, hence the quotes from Ballas, Helminth, and Jordas Golem. They're kinda what umbra is, only a little different. We get 'blueprints' yet umbra is a living being. The Sacrifice still didn't answer the question of what OUR warframes are. I'd always assumed that there was originally only one of each frame and that all the others are essentially copies, much the way our Excal Umbras are copies of the original.В The 'one of each' theory is supported by the the Mirage Prime trailer: if the Mirage subject, through force of her own personality,В distorted Ballas's design, wouldn't others put through the same process come out as something other than Mirage? I suppose it's possible that Ballas, seeing the first Mirage as being superior to his original design, altered the design so that future subjects would come out as Mirage.

Despite being created from different subjects, the results are extremely similar. Ballas created at least two Excaliburs: the first one, and Umbra. On another tangent, it seems that whatever process turns regular people into Warframes, that process can somehow be repeated on other subjects with the same results. So it seems likely that if Ballas deliberately left intact the memory of the subject killing his son, rather than wiping the memory/personality completely,В that might have warped what was intended to be another Excalibur frame into Excalibur Umbra.

Which begs the question, what makes them different? Is it because Ballas left more of the original subject's memory/personality intact? The Mirage trailer indicates that the subject's personality may have some effect on the frame's final form-Mirage's original subject laughed at Ballas when he tortured her, rather than 'writing and raging' like other subjects, and thereby 'distorted design'. So Umbras are more like a 1.1 update, an upgraded version with new features. My initial thought was that Umbras were a sort of pre-release beta, but The Sacrifice makes it clear that mainline frames were not only already in production, but already fighting the Old War when Ballas created Umbra Prime. I'm talking about, in-game, what differentiates creating Umbras from creating other frames. I'm not talking about what features an Umbra has that differ from regular/Prime frames.
